Respect the Work of Primary School Teachers*

Editorial, Liaoning Ribao

We often receive letters reporting that some local cadres and masses discriminate against primary school teachers. This is a problem meriting attention.

Right now there are altogether more than 76,000 primary school teachers in the whole province of Liaoning, and they are responsible for the education of over 2.89 million children. During the four years from 1953 to the summer of 1956, primary school teachers in the province trained nearly 1.3 million graduates of higher primary schools for the nation. Children by the millions are now growing up in primary schools and becoming acculturated. Many of them will continue their studies at higher-level schools, learning different skills. They are a vital new force in building socialism. Primary school teachers who are responsible for the training of this new force have rendered meritorious service to the state and society. They shoulder a glorious task and their work ought to be respected. A great many teachers have devoted all their energy to cultivating the new generation. They have worked for several years and even several decades as if it were only one day. In the daytime, they teach in the classroom and organize the children’s play. During lunch break or late at night, when others are resting, they either correct the children’s homework or prepare new lessons. In their spare time, they visit the children’s families to find out how they are doing at home. In rural areas, some teachers have to pick up the children in the morning and see them home in the evening. If the water level rises, they carry the children on their backs, wading through the water to take them home, lest they get into danger. As parents, each one of us should think it over: through their diligent work and concern for the children, teachers share much of the effort we spend on bringing up our children. Consequently, we can wholeheartedly devote ourselves to our own work. Can there be any reason for us to look down on and discriminate against primary school teachers.

The Party and the people’s government have always attached importance to primary school education. Compared with the old society, the social status of primary school teachers has now undergone a fundamental change. The overwhelming majority of cadres and masses hold teachers in high esteem. However, there are still quite a few cases of disrespect for, or even discrimination and insults against, teachers. Some cadres call primary school teachers the “three petties,” namely, “petty teacher,” “petty intellectual,” and “petty bourgeois.” They describe them as “having nothing much to them,” and randomly assign them jobs beyond their teaching duties. They are considered good if they are on call at any hour. Once they are slightly late or fail to show up because they are occupied with teaching work, they are accused of being “self-important,” “resisting the leadership,” and “failing to respond to the call of the country.” Some cadres at the district and township levels would
